The $200 Umbrella I've Never Used

If you go on Amazon.com and search for umbrellas between $150 and $200, you will find more than 40 different options. Like most of our clients, I am a longtime resident of the Pacific Northwest. I've endured my share of rainy seasons (as longtime residents know, it is probably easier to count the non-rainy seasons than vice versa). Investing in a good quality umbrella is a wise investment. It protects your clothes from getting wet, it ensures that the killer perm you just got stays intact, and keeps your glasses from looking like a shower door.

Did you know for that same $150 to $200, you can probably purchase a personal umbrella insurance policy? I confess that I do not own an umbrella, but I do own a personal umbrella insurance policy. For a $1,000,0000 personal umbrella insurance policy, one can expect to pay between $150 and $200 in premiums per year. Typical umbrella policies provide an additional layer of coverage for you and your family over and above your auto and homeowners coverage. Umbrella policies are also available for businesses and homeowners associations for a relatively low cost. Luckily for me, I've never needed to submit a claim to my personal umbrella policy. But it is nice to know that my home and personal assets are protected.

When I get caught in a rainstorm, I often regret my decision not to buy an umbrella. As I stand dripping wet, unfortunately, it is too late. Like a real umbrella, if you keep putting off getting a personal umbrella policy, you might find yourself in the proverbial rainstorm without any protection. For the cost of a good umbrella, you can protect the assets you've worked so hard to obtain.
